Marcel Breuer original seating:  Designed by Marcel Breuer, architect of the Saint John's Abbey Church and ten other projects for both the abbey and university, these chairs were used in the abbey chapter house, the traditional meeting room for the monks, from its construction in 1961 until 2006 when the chapter house underwent a renovation and addition.  A limited quantity of these Breuer-designed seats are available, selling as single-, double or triple-seat units. Designed specifically and uniquely for Saint John’s Abbey, these pieces continued Marcel Breuer’s development and design of furniture, a career that began with his teaching in the furniture workshop of the Bauhaus.

Limited run Monastic Refectory chairs: For the first time in over 80 years, Abbey Woodworking is reproducing, in limited quantity, the same chair that can be found in the Abbey's monastic dining room. Our eldest member - who was 106 years old - could not remember a time that these chairs were not in the monastic refectory. Using original parts as patterns and exacting construction methods, this chair is an exact replica of the original (please see the gallery for pictures.)  The monastic refectory chair makes an excellent side or occasional chair for your home or as an almuni chair in an office setting. Several have been purchased as wedding gifts, kitchen chairs and alumni chairs. Do not let the solid wood construction fool you; these chairs are comfortable for all occasions. The monastic refectory chairs are currently available in natural oil and varnish finish or a rich brown color like the originals.
